4 assumptions

The foundational beliefs this radar tests against the evidence.

Permanent ID
banking-and-housing-finance-assumption-1
Plain-language explanation
Banks and other lenders need dependable sources of money to keep making loans in both strong and weak economies. Customer deposits and other funding provide that foundation. If customers withdraw money quickly or funding becomes scarce or expensive, institutions may raise borrowing costs or reduce lending, making it harder for households and businesses to obtain credit.

banking-and-housing-finance-assumption-2
Plain-language explanation
Lenders decide who can borrow, and on what terms, by estimating how likely a loan is to be repaid and what the property behind it is worth. Those judgments have to be accurate enough to cover losses across a full cycle. If the models misjudge borrowers or collateral values, lenders can accumulate bad loans, tighten credit sharply, or price it so that sound borrowers are shut out.

banking-and-housing-finance-assumption-3
Plain-language explanation
Homebuyers depend on mortgages they can afford and lenders can readily sell on, and the whole arrangement rests on homes holding value that can be assessed and realized. If long-dated mortgages become scarce or much costlier, or if homes become harder to value, insure or sell, buyers may afford less, credit may tighten, and household wealth held in property could shift substantially.

banking-and-housing-finance-assumption-4
Plain-language explanation
Banks hold a privileged position because customers trust them with money and because public rules and protections are believed to hold in a crisis. That position also depends on banks still earning enough from lending, payments and safekeeping. If confidence in those protections weakens, or customers find the same services cheaper elsewhere, banks could lose deposits, revenue and their central role in the economy.

Evidence timeline

No evidence records have been ingested for this radar. Once records exist, each entry shows its source, publication date, analyst interpretation and review status, and links to the assumptions or hurdles it bears on.

Potential impact — pending assessment

No breakthrough capability has yet been assessed as bearing on these assumptions. A relationship appears here only once its mechanism of impact has been recorded. A capability becoming more feasible does not by itself strengthen or weaken an industry assumption.

Future scenarios

Future scenarios will be generated from the interaction of current signals, assumption changes, and breakthrough progress.
