5 assumptions

The foundational beliefs this radar tests against the evidence.

Permanent ID
defense-assumption-1
Plain-language explanation
A major conflict is often shaped in its first days. This assumes the United States can assemble the right forces quickly and act together with allies before an opponent secures a position that is hard to reverse. A force that arrives late, or that cannot coordinate across services and partners, may be unable to achieve its objectives however capable it is overall.

defense-assumption-2
Plain-language explanation
Modern operations lean heavily on satellite links, precise positioning and continuous data. This assumes units can keep fighting when those are jammed, destroyed or unreliable. If plans depend on connections staying up, an adversary may not need to defeat the force directly, because disrupting the links could be enough to disable otherwise capable units.

defense-assumption-3
Plain-language explanation
Sustained fighting consumes munitions, fuel, spare parts, medical care and transport at rates peacetime planning rarely tests. This assumes enough of all of it, delivered even while supply routes are under attack. Superior equipment does not decide a long war if stocks run out or if losses cannot be repaired and replaced in time.

defense-assumption-4
Plain-language explanation
Advanced systems matter, but so does the ability to build them in quantity and replace them at a price that can be afforded repeatedly. This assumes industry can deliver weapons, munitions and replacements in useful numbers on useful timelines. Equipment too costly or too slow to replace leaves forces exposed to attrition in a prolonged conflict.

defense-assumption-5
Plain-language explanation
Fighting a major war needs people as much as hardware: crews, maintainers, technical specialists and leaders, trained realistically and retained long enough to be good at it. This assumes the services can recruit, keep and prepare them in sufficient numbers. Budgets and equipment cannot fully compensate for missing skills or for training that has not been done.

Evidence timeline

No evidence records have been ingested for this radar. Once records exist, each entry shows its source, publication date, analyst interpretation and review status, and links to the assumptions or hurdles it bears on.

Potential impact — pending assessment

No breakthrough capability has yet been assessed as bearing on these assumptions. A relationship appears here only once its mechanism of impact has been recorded. A capability becoming more feasible does not by itself strengthen or weaken an industry assumption.

Future scenarios

Future scenarios will be generated from the interaction of current signals, assumption changes, and breakthrough progress.
