The beliefs under pressure

Load-bearing assumptions

3 assumptions

The foundational beliefs this radar tests against the evidence.

Permanent ID
retail-assumption-1
Plain-language explanation
Retail depends on getting the right goods to the right places at a price customers accept, reliably enough that shelves and delivery slots are filled. This assumes sourcing, shipping and fulfillment stay affordable and robust. Tariffs, disruption or rising logistics costs can compress already thin margins, limit selection, or push prices past what customers are willing to pay.

retail-assumption-2
Plain-language explanation
Large retailers earn their margins from buying power, own-brand ranges and customers who return without being paid for each time. This assumes those advantages hold. If shopping assistants or automated agents begin choosing products on customers' behalf, or if loyalty weakens, even very large retailers may find themselves competing on price alone with less bargaining power.

retail-assumption-3
Plain-language explanation
How people find and receive goods keeps shifting between shops, websites, marketplaces, creators and delivery services. This assumes retailers can keep reshaping their stores, warehouses and digital channels to match. If discovery moves somewhere retailers do not control, or if stores lose the roles that justify their cost, store networks, employment and property demand could all change materially.

Evidence timeline

No evidence records have been ingested for this radar. Once records exist, each entry shows its source, publication date, analyst interpretation and review status, and links to the assumptions or hurdles it bears on.

Potential impact — pending assessment

No breakthrough capability has yet been assessed as bearing on these assumptions. A relationship appears here only once its mechanism of impact has been recorded. A capability becoming more feasible does not by itself strengthen or weaken an industry assumption.

Future scenarios

Future scenarios will be generated from the interaction of current signals, assumption changes, and breakthrough progress.
